Our Bible verse for today: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Our thought for today: “Trust in God’s perfect wisdom.”
Yesterday we spent some time thinking about the Omniscience of God, His perfect knowledge of all things. We learned that God knows everything about everything. There is nothing He doesn’t know. That then, must mean that God has perfect wisdom. So whatever insight He gives us, whatever He tells us to do, must be perfectly wise and therefore irrefutably right.
In his book “The Knowledge of the Holy” A.W. Tozer writes, “When seen from the lofty peak of Sinai or Calvary, the whole history of the world is discovered to be but a contest between the wisdom of God and the cunning of Satan and fallen men … Wisdom, among other things, is the ability to devise perfect ends and to achieve those ends by the most perfect means … all God’s acts are done in perfect wisdom, first for His own glory, and then for the highest good of the greatest number for the longest time.”
No matter how things look to us in the midst of this broken and bleeding world, all of God’s commands and acts come out of His perfect wisdom, and will, in the end (if obeyed and followed by us), lead to His perfect outcome. As Tozer observes, most of us go through life praying a little, planning a little, doing our best in our own understanding, and hoping for a good result. The better way to do it is to forsake our own wisdom, surrender our will for God’s, trust Him to lead us where He wants us to go, and then to do what He wants us to do.
This is the point Solomon was teaching in Proverbs 3:5-6. Stop relying on your own wisdom and on the ways of the world. Carefully study God and His ways. Seek guidance from Him for every decision you make and every step that you take. Then trust Him to lead you where He wants you to go. God wants you to live according to His will even more than you want it. His promise is that if you will surrender your will for His, and if you will sincerely seek to obey Him and honor Him, He will lead you and guide you.
Since God is Omniscient it means that He has perfect wisdom and that His ways are therefore perfectly wise. The best life you will ever have is when you have surrendered your will for His, and you trust Him to lead you day-by-day, decision-by-decision.
